In Greek mythology, the architect Daedalus designed the Cretan Labyrinth to imprison the bull-headed Minotaur. Theseus, a young Athenian, volunteers to enter the labyrinth and kill the Minotaur. Ariadne helped Theseus succeed by giving him a sword and a skein of red thread she was spinning so that he could find his way out of the labyrinth.
